MW3 CARRY FORWARD CONTENT EXPLAINED: WHAT TRANSFERS FROM MW2?

Modern Warfare 3 releases on November 10th, 2023. For the first time in Call of Duty history, players will be able to transfer their content from Modern Warfare II into Modern Warfare III. Here’s when and how all content will carry forward from MW2 into MW3.

WHAT IS THE NEW CARRY FORWARD FEATURE

Earlier this year, rumors from the press suggested that Call of Duty wouldn’t see a premium release in 2023, but instead a paid expansion would be dropped for Modern Warfare 2. The new carry forward feature may be proof of that original plan for 2023, as for the first time ever, players can pick up where they left off with MW2 inside of MW3.

While Modern Warfare 3 IS a standalone title featuring a new campaign, multiplayer and co op mode, players can continue their progression that they may have started or even completed in last year’s Modern Warfare 2. Players will have the option to use Modern Warfare 2’s weapons, operators and cosmetics inside of Sledgehammer’s upcoming title. Here’s what I learned in a creator briefing with Activision about the content transfer system in Modern Warfare 3:

HOW WEAPONS TRANSFER INTO MODERN WARFARE 3

It was confirmed by the the studio that every single weapon from Modern Warfare 2 will be usable in Modern Warfare 3 on launch day, November 10th. Players will be able to use the weapon’s same set of attachments and gunsmith options as they may have used in last year’s installment. All attachments and pro tuning features will be available, along with the weapon’s level. If a player chooses to go back to Modern Warfare 2, then all the progress they made with that weapon in the new title will also be accounted for. Players can also complete all MW2 weapon challenges while using those weapons in MW3.

HOW CAMOS TRANSFER INTO MODERN WARFARE 3

The folks who grinned for Orion or the veteran raid camos in Modern Warfare 2 are not only able to use those unlocks in Warzone, but Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer as well. While all MW2 camos are available in MW3 multiplayer, the camos are only usable on weapons from last year’s installment, not any exclusive weapons within Modern Warfare 3. As a bonus to this, the studio confirmed players can grind any and all camo challenges from MW2, inside of MW3. While Modern Warfare 3 will have it’s own exclusive mastery camo and weapon progression system, it’s great to see more value added to last year’s grind.

HOW COSMETICS TRANSFER INTO MODERN WARFARE 3

All operators and cosmetics that players unlocked through challenges or bundles will be available day 1 inside of Modern Warfare 3. This includes any rare or expired content which may be no longer purchasable in the shop or obtainable in a specific mode. Essentially, a player’s entire inventory will transfer into the new Call of Duty, including all weapon blueprints. The only cosmetics that won’t transfer are ones tied to an item that’s not featured in MW3’s ecosystem. As an example, it was confirmed the TAV won’t be inside MW3, meaning players can use their MW2 TAV skins in the next title. Players can expect the return of finishers, calling cards, charms and emblems which already have a plethora of choices thanks to Modern Warfare 2.

HOW CONTENT TRANSFERS IN THE BETA

Towards the end of the briefing, the studio confirmed that the upcoming beta won’t feature any Modern Warfare 2 content, but that plans can change. It’s likely the beta will focus solely on new content that players can experiment with, instead of allowing people to use meta weaponry from last year’s title. The MW3 beta is currently rumored to release on October 6th for Playstation’s exclusive weekend, then the weekend of October 12th for all platforms.

HOW CONTENT TRANSFERS IN SEASON 1

Although it was already confirmed that players can use their MW2 content on launch day, fans may be wondering when MW3 content will transfer into Warzone. Activision confirmed that like with the last three Warzone integrations, fans can expect to see their MW3 content added to Warzone beginning with Season 1, currently rumored for December 5th. It’s also possible that with each new season, other MW2 items such as vehicles get added to MW3, thus allowing players to equip skins for that item which they may have purchased or unlocked last year. It also remains to be seen if future bundles will contain items for both Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3.
