The campaign early access period for Modern Warfare 3 is slated for November 3rd, but a spoiler for the story may have been leaked by a South Korea game rating board. The MW3 story kicks off with an unknown PMC group breaking a prisoner out of the Verdansk gulag. Modern Warfare III launches globally on November 10th.
Operation 627 – Prisoner Breakout
As expected, around ten minutes of gameplay for an upcoming campaign mission released for Modern Warfare 3, as we’ve seen for each new Call of Duty prior to launch. The gameplay focused on the first mission in game, which has an unknown set of characters breaking into the Verdansk prison to free a mysterious character.
The prisoner is numbered ‘627’ which reminded hardcore fans of the original prisoner 627 mission from Modern Warfare 2 (2009). At the end of COD 4 (2007), Captain Price gets taken prisoner and is sent to the gulag, where Soap then rescues him in the sequel. While many have speculated that Captain Price could be the prisoner yet again, it raises many questions as to when price may have purposely (or accidentally) got captured and sent to the Konni controlled gulag.
The Captain Price Red Herring
Captain Price actor Barry Sloan recently updated his Twitter name with “627” at the end, which fans are claiming was just a red herring. While the Modern Warfare reboot has borrowed several elements from the original trilogy such as the 141 crew, shadow company betrayal and villainous arcs for Zakhaev and Makarov, the new series certainly isn’t a 1:1 remake of the original. It IS possible that Price needs to be rescued from Verdansk, but he was JUST there at the end of Modern Warfare (2019) Season 6 where he killed Victor Zakhaev. It’s likely Barry Sloan is purposely throwing us off with his Twitter name change.
Prisoner 627 *SPOILER* From South Korea
A recent game rating from South Korea has potentially provided us with the answer as to who we are breaking out of prison at the beginning of campaign. Fair warning and spoiler ahead in case this information is more than an out of context placeholder. The individual is none other than Makarov, which still raises a number of questions.
How could Makarov a prisoner in a Konni controlled prison, when Konni is an ultra nationalist group that he operates. The Makarov reveal trailer did depict the infamous villain in a prison, so breaking him out does make sense narratively. It’s possible that the private PMC group is working to break a new name character out of the prison, which leads to an accidental Makarov breakout in the process. Unless Call of Duty purposely threw us off by confirming Konni is in control of the gulag through their recent blogpost, then something isn’t right about this.
A first-person shooter game about Makarov escaping from the Gulag to start a war — and Task Force 141’s efforts to stop him.
The Return Of Some Familiar Faces
Just recently, the Call of Duty community noticed that Gene Farber, the actor behind Kamarov, posted an instagram photo next to the actor who played Barkov, the villain from MW2019. It’s been theorized that Kamarov has something to do with the prisoner breakout, while Makarov then gets caught in the mix and escapes in the process. The instagram photo was posted in May, meaning it’s either for the MW2 Season 6 cutscene, or a cinematic for Modern Warfare 3.
Kamarov briefly appeared in the post credit scene of MW2019, where he briefed Captain Price on the Al Qatala invasion of Verdansk, while Barkov died at the hands of Farrah during the final mission. Further Verdansk flashbacks with Kamarov and Barkov could help setup Makarov’s arc in Modern Warfare III.
