THE HAUNTING EVENT DOWNLOAD
Earlier today, Playstation Game Size reported on the next title update for Modern Warfare 2, update 1.28. The preload for this patch should begin to roll out first on Playstation, beginning next Monday, October 16th, a day before the beginning of the mid season update. The Haunting patch may not be as big as previous title updates, as most of the halloween festivities were already added in with the initial Season 6 download.
ALL HAUNTING OPERATORS, BUNDLES & RELEASE DATE
As a reminder, new daily login rewards are being added during the Haunting event, which will provide players with free halloween themed cosmetics. More bundles are also bound to be added with the mid season update, but here are all of the licensed crossover packs releasing in the sixth and final season of Modern Warfare 2:
- Spawn – September 27th (1100CP Battle Pass)
- Alucard – October 4th (2400CP Bundle)
- DOOM Weapon Pack – October 9th (1800CP Bundle)
- Lilith – October 15th (2400CP Bundle)
- Skeletor – October 17th (2800CP Bundle)

THE HAUNTING CHALLENGE EVENT (SOUL CAPTURE)
Much like the trophy hunt event from MW2 Season 3, the Haunting is introducing a Soul Capture event, which can be completed in Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ. As confirmed in the blogpost, any time a player is eliminated, they leave a Soul behind. Collecting these souls will automatically add to your total in all game modes. Unlike trophy hunt, there’s no need to visit an upload station in DMZ or Warzone to deposit what you’ve collected. You can also Increase the number of Souls you capture by defeating the bigger monsters across Al Mazrah and Vondel.
Infinity Ward recently published a behind the scenes interview with Todd McFarlane, where they illustrated how they brought Spawn to life in Call of Duty. Within this video, a few seconds of footage are shown of the Haunting event tab, providing a glimpse of upcoming challenges, rewards and more. The list of rewards thus far include but are not limited to:
- Boo Sticker – 15 Souls
- Skull Calling Card – 30 Souls
- Double Weapon XP Token – 30 Souls
- Haunting Charm – 60 Souls
- Light Helo Skin – 90 Souls
- Pistol Weapon Blueprint – 150 Souls
- Rose Operator Skin – Unlocking Any 10 Rewards in Soul Capture
UNLOCK THE SOUL HARVESTER WEAPON BLUEPRINT
During The COD NEXT reveal event, Activision unofficially unveiled a previously leaked pre order bonus for Modern Warfare 3. By pre ordering any edition of MW3, fans will unlock the Soul Harvester weapon blueprint, which allows players to capture more souls during the haunting. It’s unclear if this infers that there’s a cap on how many souls can be captured in a single game, as there was with trophies during the trophy hunt event. Apart from killing enemy operators across any of the three available game modes, fans are encouraged to use this blueprint against some of the bosses which reportedly drop more souls than actual players.
ANIMATED GHOULIE CAMO COMING SOON
During the launch of Season 5 Reloaded, twitter leakers shared a glimpse of an animated camo that didn’t have an unlock challenge or event tied to it. The camo’s name was later discovered to be “Ghoulie” and is potentially tied to the Soul Capture event. Trophy hunt in Season 3 offered an animated calling card for redeeming 1,000 trophies, which took players a lengthy amount of time to unlock. It’s possible the Ghoulie camo will require an absurd amount of souls to unlock, which can be grinded even faster thanks to the Boss fights or the Soul Harvester weapon blueprint.
OPERATION NIGHTMARE SIGHTINGS AND REWARDS
During the duration of the Haunting, Al Mazrah will feature anomalous entities roaming around different points of interest. Finding each of these entities will reward players with a mastery calling card for use in any game mode. These sightings include but are not limited to:
- Find a Reaper in Al-Safwa Quarry
- Find a Specter in Al Mazrah City
- Find a Ghoul in Al Bagra Fortress
- Find a Witch in Al Malik Airport
OPERATION NIGHTMARE BOSS FIGHTS & REWARDS
Aside from the soul capture event and point of interest updates on Al Mazrah or Vondel, there will be six different bosses roaming around Warzone. As we get closer to the Haunting’s launch, this article will be updated with more context on these bosses and rewards. For now, here are the most wanted bosses, monsters and rewards that have been revealed:
- The Butcher – Defeat The Butcher By Activating The Altars of Lilith (Calling Card Unlock)
- Swamp Creature – Find The Tiara to Summon & Defeat Swamp Creature (Calling Card Unlock)
- The Pharaoh – Sarcophagus to Awaken & Defeat The Pharaoh (Calling Card Unlock)
- UFO – Destroy The Anomalies, Then Deliver The Artifact to The Portal (Calling Card Unlock)
- Ghost Train – Raid The Train & Capture The Heart From The Safe (Calling Card Unlock)
- Evil Spirits – Listed Above in Nightmare Sightings
Players will unlock the Bloody Mess BAS-P blueprint for having completed five out of six most wanted challenges. These challenges are exclusive to Al Mazrah.
OPERATION NIGHTMARE MAP UPDATES
Both Al Mazrah and Vondel are set to receive halloween reskins as part of the Haunting event on October 17th. There are mysterious Altairs that are appearing about; take them out if you can, but be careful for it’s being rumored that a demon protects these Altairs. The Hellmouth has also caused issues for the city of Vondel; a sorceress has cursed the city, causing a blood moon to ominously hang over the city, the canals now flow with blood, and the undead are now released upon the land.
THE FINAL DMZ UPDATE IN SEASON 6
Along with the new additions that are coming to Al Mazrah and Vondead in Warzone; operators can expect to encounter the horrific evils during a DMZ deployment! For those that have been asking for DMZ at night, here’s your chance! You can complete the Altairs and more in DMZ, so if Warzone’s restrictive storms and player counts aren’t your thing, or are hoping for a more immersive experience, this is for you. We can consider this the final DMZ update is bound to get before the launch of Modern Warfare 3, as the mode isn’t scheduled to receive any additional content once the lifecycle of MW2 concludes.
Fans have already begun to find Halloween themed loot around DMZ, including a butcher cleaver (worth $6600) and a heat resistant hell key for the Ghost train
EXCLUSIVE HAUNTING BOXES & EQUIPMENT
There’s now Haunted Boxes scattered around that leave tons of good loot, but be careful when opening them, for a living maw possesses the boxes. These boxes can be found from Zombies of which will occasionally drop them.
The Bloodseeker Grenade is shaped like a vampire bat and is formed from an unknown evil. The goal of this grenade is to attach to enemies and highlight them for easy tracking during the night, however, the grenades do not work against those who dwell in the water.
Your Loadouts will also be possessed with the Sound Veil Scream which is a change to the Suppression Mine that makes the audio screams of the dead, and the Decoy Grenade that adds monstrous sounds to the noise.
Lastly, be careful of looting everything you sere, for there will be an occasional jumpscare waiting for you…
ALL LIMITED TIME HAUNTING GAME MODES
The popular mode that led to the infamous Nuking of Verdansk back in 2021 is making a return! There is no nuke this time (at least, that we know of), but the thrills of playing as a Zombie have returned! Zombie Royale will be a limited-time mode for both Al Mazrah and Vondel that will appear during the mid-season!
The gulag is now closed. Upon death, operators will instead reanimate as the undead with new abilities and a chance at resurrection. Don’t go into the graveyards alone, the dead are around every corner, so make sure to have a friend or 2 with you. As the match comes to a close; every operator spectating will be brought back to the afterlife as a Zombie in an effort to slay the living once more! Think of it like a jailbreak event, but with a necromancy twist!
The Lockdown LTM also returns, but this time, it’s under a dark and moonlit Vondel. Make sure to hone in your skills before tackling the source of the incursion…
THE HAUNTING SPREADS TO MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer is joining in on the festivities this year! Two maps will be getting a spooky reskin & gamemodes will get a haunting (pun intended) twist! Both El Asilo and Embassy are receiving halloween reskins which can be played in both public and private matches. With the launch of Season 6, we got an early glimpse of El Asilo’s halloween reskin as the map became available early in custom games. The following game modes are also being updated with a halloween twist:
- Domination – Scarecrows instead of flags
- Kill Confirmed & Grind – Skulls instead of dog tags
- Drop Zone – Jumpscare care packages
- Infected – Haunting-themed infected (no super-abilities)
