MW2 FREE ACCESS MULTIPLAYER IS LIVE, BUT WITH A CATCH

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer free access is currently live for Season 5, but comes with a catch this time around. Players can jump into MW2 Multiplayer for FREE on all platforms beginning today, September 13th, until September 20th at 10am PT. The usual free access window for MWII Multiplayer comes with a heavy restriction this time around as opposed to previous seasons, but Playstation users have been cut some slack.

How to Access MW2 Multiplayer For Free

Regardless of the platform a user is on, players can find the option to download Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer for free if they already have Warzone installed, or if they head to their platform’s store menu, where Call of Duty will be advertised front and center. The user will then be prompted to download the Multiplayer patch, which comes with limited but a fair amount of content featured in Season 5.

What Can I Play During Season 5 Free Access

While just a portion of MWII Multiplayer is accessible during this free access window, players are able to jump into more maps and modes than previously offered in Seasons 1-4. It’s a common trend for the free access period each season to offer more than the last period. Here’s everything you can play from now until September 20th:

6v6 Core Maps: Shipment, Shoot House, Dome, Farm 18, Mercado Las Almas, Embassy, Vondel Waterfront, DRC — Zone 1, Punta Mar, Strike
Battle Maps: Guijarro, Al Malik International
Core Modes: Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Confirmed, Grind, Search & Destroy

There’s a Catch This Time Around

Fans may have noticed that as opposed to just one weekend of free access to Multiplayer, Season 5’s offering has been extended to a week long event. Upon reading the fine print on the free access graphic or the blogpost, it’s been made clear that players can only jump into MWII Multiplayer for a TOTAL of 2.5 hours during the entire duration of the free access week. A restriction of this nature has never been seen during a free access period for any Call of Duty, and it’s unclear if this is a change we’ll be seeing to all future offerings like this.

Playstation Users Get an Advantage

Sony quietly announced that on 16th and running until the 17th of September, players can jump into Modern Warfare 2 (2022) multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V and Diablo 4 for FREE without a PS Plus subscription. This means Playstation users get unlimited time on MW2 Multiplayer during that window, but will still be restricted to 2.5 hours on the other days while Season 5 Free Access is live. It’s unclear if this is a new change that Sony requested from Activision to emphasize additional benefits of playing Call of Duty on Playstation, especially during a free access window. The current Playstation and Call of Duty exclusivity contract expires after the lifecycle of Modern Warfare 3 concludes.
