Black Ops 2 Update in 2024 — Everything That Changed

Treyarch has actually updated Black Ops 2, a Call of Duty from 2012, in the year 2024. As apart of the Microsoft Acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it appears older COD titles are getting cleaned up to prepare for a Xbox Game Pass integration. Black Ops II received a minor update in 2020, but has once again gotten some stealth changes which certainly improve the nostalgic multiplayer experience. Here’s everything we know about the 2024 update for BO2:

Do You Need to Download It?

Luckily, a patch doesn’t need to be downloaded for the 2024 Black Ops 2 update. A hot fix went out this past week for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

It’s unlikely that Black Ops 2 will receive any further downloadable updates, but hot fixes are likely to continue as all older COD titles eventually make their way to Xbox Game Pass.

What Issues Was Black Ops 2 Having?

For years, hackers have run rampant throughout older titles like Black Ops 2. While that’s certainly unlikely to change, cheating methods via Theater Mode infected films have been increasingly more common for the better half of a decade.

Server issues and even accessibility errors pertaining to Emblem Editor become noticeable several months ago in Black Ops 2. The COD TV tab wasn’t functioning as intended, as various categories and thumbnails were displaying incorrectly, or not loading at all.

Everything That Changed in The Update

In 2020, a patch also went out that brought back Theater mode following a bug that disabled the feature. This week’s patch seemingly removed all infected films which were giving players access to mod menus. It’s likely that these exploits will return in the future, but have been wiped clean for now.

The barracks tab now contains a ‘NEW’ tag, as emblem editor has been fully restored following a bug which disabled it for awhile. COD TV is once again fully operational, with the correct thumbnails and community categories working as intended. Players can now see up to date clips and what’s trending, while any infected files are now labeled as error.

Preparing For Game Pass Integration

Phil Spencer recently confirmed with Xbox that Call of Duty is now considered a first party title. All first party titles are expected to release day 1 on Xbox Game Pass, which puts COD 2024 into question. Regardless though, the older COD titles are expected to make their way onto Game Pass, but it’s now a matter of when, which may be this year.

It’s likely Microsoft wants to integrate the older Call of Duty games in the most stable condition, even if it’s just a short period of time before hackers infest the lobbies again. Any and all game breaking bugs will surely be ironed out before the integration, even if the game is over a decade old.

So About Black Ops 2 Remastered

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, the press has reported that a direct sequel to Black Ops 2 which takes place in the future, will be releasing in 2025, just a year after the rumored Black Ops Gulf War title. Fan favorite maps from BO2 maps will allegedly be featured as launch content for COD 2025’s multiplayer, similar to the MW3 launch offering which contains all MW2 ‘09 maps remastered.

While a direct Black Ops 2 remaster likely isn’t in the cards for Activision, they’ll probably go the route of MW3 (2023) with carry forward while bringing in as much nostalgia from BO2 as possible.
