Within the walls of Citadelle Des Morts lay an ancient sword. This sword is a formidable weapon to slay down hordes of the undead with, as well as blocking projectile attacks. Though through unknown means, this sword can be transformed into one of four unique elemental wonder weapons. Today, we’re going to go over how to unlock the base sword, as well as each elemental upgrade. Let’s head on into the forge, shall we?
Unlocking the Base Sword
After making your way into the Citadel & unlocking Pack-A-Punch, there will be Zombies that spawn with helmets on them. You’ll want to kill these zombies & they will drop a stamp.
Pick up this stamp of the four sons & bring it into the ‘Dining Hall’ & interact with one of the four statues. This will give you access to the Base Sword.
Unlocking the Elemental Upgrades
Caliburn: Dragon’s Fire
Create a fiery maelstrom of burning undead flesh, setting zombies alight and summoning an immense fireball.
Upon grabbing the Base Sword from the Dragon Knight, head into the courtyard & up the stairs. You’ll find a dragon statue with a mount for the sword. Place it & it will begin your trial.
There are three stands that will be lit with fire. Interacting with a stand will set you on fire, & you must run back to the dragon statue. The fire will damage you as you hold it, so be quick! These are the 3 locations of the stands:
- To the left of ‘Town Square’, right outside the door.
- ‘In Town Square’ Infront of the Rampage Inducer, to the right of spawn.’In Town square Infront of the Rampage Inducer, to the right of spawn.
- On the right side on the upper levels of the ‘Village Ramparts’
After placing the 3 different fires into the Dragon Statue, the dragon will breathe fire & upgrade your sword. You now have access to Caliburn.
Durendal: Stag of the Storms
Summon thunderous power from the skies, discharging voltaic power to stun and stagger, before an electrical beam serves up a severe searing.
To unlock Durendal, collect the sword from the Stag Knight Statue.
You’ll then want to collect three electric rods. You can find these rods in the following locations:
- One Rod is located near Deadshot
- One is dropped from killing a zombie.
- One is found by shooting an electrical box closer to speed cola. Use deadwire.
Take & place all 3 of these rods into a vase on the upper side of the ‘Village Ramparts’. Stay near it with your sword & wait for electricity to strike your sword. Hit the vase with your sword once charged. Repeat this step 3 times & then place your sword into the vase. It’ll charge & you’ll then have access to Durendal.
Balmung: Raven’s Shadow
Cast your rotting foes into the Aetherial abyss, warping nearby enemies with a focused liminal tear.
To unlock Balmung, you’ll want to grab the sword from the Crow Knight Statue. Head over to the Alchemy room & Interact with one of 3 bone trophies. After grabbing a trophy, head into the downstairs area of the Tavern & place it into the Rune Circle, along with placing the sword into it as well.
Now, depending on which trophy you have, you’ll have to align the respective astrological symbols together. Guessing always is an option as well. These are the working astrology combos so far.

After completing the puzzle, the rune will begin spawning void bubbles. You’ll want to lead these bubbles over a rift that spawn in the ground. After repeating this step 3 times, you’ll gain access to Balmung.
Solais: Lion of Light
The warmth of Light courses through you as you send foes screaming into darkness.
To unlock Solais, you’ll want to collect the sword from the Lion Knight Statue & kill 4 Parasites that are glowing yellow with your sword. Doing this will charge the sword temporarily. Take it & hit the Lion Head Door found in the ‘Upper Village’. After repeating this 4 times, you will be able to enter the room.
Once inside the room, place your sword into the pillar. After doing so, shoot symbols floating around in order from Top to Bottom on the pillar. You’ll now have access to Solais.
Unlocking the Incantations
These 4 Incantations are a necessity to the main quest. These incantations are powerful 2x use tacticals that can be used against the zombies, as well as unlock certain progress for steps. Here’s how you unlock all Incantations.
Caliburn Incantation
Using the Caliburn Sword, make your way to 3 different stacks of firewood atop the castle. Here are the three locations:
- One is above Elemental Pop
- The next is above the Castle Entrance
- The final is on a hill above Speed Cola
Lighting all three fires will spawn a Doppleghast. Kill it & collect the artifact it drops. The Ankh. Bring the Ankh to a yellow rune that appears on the ground in the courtyard. Kill zombies & charge the artifact. After charging it fully, another Golden Chest should appear. Slay the box with the Caliburn Sword.
Durendal Incantation
Head over to the Stables over by Deadshot with the Durendal Sword. A horseshoe hangs above one of the entrances. Shoot it down & grab it. Head over to the Cannon & fire yourself out of it. After doing this, you should see a Storm Cloud nearby. Once you go up to the Storm cloud, you should see an item that belongs to Pegasus.
Bring that item over to the yellow Rune on the floor in the Spawn Room. Interact with it & it will begin a soul box step. Kill zombies & charge it further. A Golden Chest will spawn upon completion. Use the Lightning Sword & slay the box.
Balmung Incantation
Take the Sewer Fast Travel to spawn. Near the end, you should spot a Crow on the right side. Shoot it & it should disappear. This should lead to the Crow flying above the spawn & surrounding areas. Shoot it again & a small purple glowing item should fall into the spawn area.
This item will be a Crow’s foot. Grab it & head down into the Undercroft. Interact with the Rune & complete the soul box with enough kills. This will trigger a Gold Chest to appear. Use the Balmung Sword on the box.
Solais Incantation
Within the Statue Room/Dining Hall, you will spot a crystal at the top of the room. Shoot this crystal & you will cause it to fire a beam. This beam will fire in contrast to the direction you’re shooting it from. Link these light beams together into several different crystals until it reaches a mannequin on a table. This mannequin piece will spawn an Amulet.
Grab this Amulet & head out into the Dining Hall/Statue Room. Right infront of the Lion Painting on the wall & a rune should appear on the ground. Fill it with zombie souls until it spawns in a Golden Chest. Slay the box with the Stolais Sword.
You’ve now unlocked all 4 incantations!
