Will Reznov Return in Black Ops 6 | The John Trent Mystery

For over a decade, hardcore Black Ops fans have debated whether or not Viktor Reznov really died in Vorkuta, or if Treyarch left his fate open ended to eventually bring him back into the fold. The Black Ops (2010) terminal also contained emails from an individual named John Trent. With Black Ops 6 bringing us back to Vorkuta, could Treyarch finally be addressing the whereabouts of Reznov and the mysterious John Trent? Let’s break it down:

The Return to Vorkuta

During the Black Ops 6 direct, it was confirmed that throughout the Campaign, players will be revisiting the iconic locale Vorkuta, last seen in Black Ops (2010).

It appears a smaller Strike map will also take place in the Vorkuta tunnels, which likely means a 6v6 version is also on it’s way.

Did Reznov Really Die in Vorkuta?

  • In the Campaign mission “The Defector”, you can see the actual Defector dead by the table where Reznov picks up the files. Mason and others will say the defector is alive after this, because Mason thinks it is Reznov.

  • Reznov will speak to other characters but only Mason ever answers him, because only he hears him.

  • You literally see two perspectives of the events of Rebirth Island. From Mason’s perspective, he sees Reznov, but from Hudson’s you see that Mason is the only one there and is committing the actions he believes to be Reznov’s.

  • After the mission “Revelations” Hudson reveals that Reznov had already been dead for five years, with the Vorkuta riot ultimately leading to his death. The CIA file on Reznov marked Reznov as deceased, but it was never disclosed what exactly happened.
  • Mason had last seen Reznov on a truck going off into the distance, which indicates someone else helped Mason escape, or Reznov truly did before being killed off screen.
  • In the 1986 Black Ops 2 mission set in Afghan, Mason and Woods are abandoned in a desert to die but are later saved by Reznov. Woods doesn’t recall seeing him, but Mason claims that it was the infamous Viktor after more than 20 years since he last saw him.
  • If the player decodes the phonetic alphabet code names (X-ray, Sierra etc.)  into their first letters, and changing the serial numbers into letters (A-1, B-2) in the beginning of each level, and removing all the Xs, the player will get this message, “Reznov is dead. Or is he dead? There was no body. Is he who he says he is”.

The John Trent Conspiracy

Within the Black Ops terminal, several emails sent from a mysterious John Trent to Hudson, The CIA and even JFK were discovered. These emails have been speculated to be from Viktor Reznov, if he indeed survived the events of the Vorkuta insurrection.

Theories suggest these emails could be Reznov warning others about Mason’s brainwashing and the events that might unfold, such as the assassination of JFK, if he isn’t stopped. Other theories suggest these were emails from Mason, as he struggles with personality disorder.

Here are all the John Trent emails:

The 3 Layers of Interpretation

Your Average Player

Reznov died in Vorkuta. The obvious assumption you’d take from a quick campaign playthrough.

Your More Involved Players

They read the terminal and notice the phonetic alphabet at the beginning of each mission, which basically says “Reznov is dead. Or is he dead? There was no body. Is he who he says he is”. Begin assuming the twist is that Reznov really is / was alive beyond Vorkuta and him being a hallucination was wrong (at least in some of the times you see him)

Your Hardcore Black Ops Fans

Reznov is dead and John Trent is actually Mason.

Mason has many “episodes” of lost time that we don’t see, implied to be like what happens in the Rebirth mission. I assume he’s in third person during these times watching himself as Reznov, or simply blacks out and believes he is Reznov for a period of time , the memories afterwards moving to his subconscious.

As John Trent, he sends several messages to CIA people, mainly Hudson. The most frightening one is the day before the jfk assassination, he even sends an email to jfk titled “you have one day left” with the text “victory cannot be achieved without sacrifice”, which is a line from reznov to mason in Vorkuta. This would be something that the “brainwashed” half of Mason would be aware of, as the ending of Black Ops 1 heavily implies that Mason is the real JFK shooter.

This would place the John Trent JFK emails as a cry for help from mason’s subconscious which does not want to go through with the orders the numbers are giving him. He emails both JFK and Hudson hoping that he would be stopped.

3 days after the JFK assassination, he sends hudson a picture of Evelyn Cross (the woman who gets zoomed in on during the Pentagon mission) who is implied to be the double agent running the number station, and also implied to be Mason’s handler for Dragovich. John Trent also implies these are true.

Evelyn says to jfk via email “give him what he asks for or your life will be in danger” – jfk met with her in Berlin, so I’m inclined to wonder if the reznov persona was always acting instead of Dragovitch’s code, and he leveraged both Evelyn Cross as a Russian Agent and Mason’s CIA connections to try and get info on Dragovitch, Kravchenko, and Steiner. she sounds scared almost in her emails.

Trent attaches an echelon code to the email to Hudson which translates to “OSWALD COMPROMISED” – this is obviously alluding to Lee Harvey Oswald not being the shooter.

Furthermore, during the mission Revelations, when Mason is seeing/hearing all of the wildest versions of the numbers hallucinations, he screams “OSWALD COMPROMISED”, meaning that was a code he heard and translated to enact orders. IE – these codes are auto translated in Mason’s head, and the same thing sent in this email was beamed into Mason’s head from the numbers station.

Obviously, all of these people and events in the emails are related to Mason and only tangentially related to Reznov’s targets. It makes much more sense a blacked out / mind controlled mason is sending the john trent emails rather than an on the run and in hiding Reznov. The reason the signs in the writing style seem to suggest Reznov is because Mason, when under the mind control, truly believes he IS Victor Reznov.

Ultimately, it seems as though Treyarch intentionally seeded multiple layers of understanding into this twist, where you will feel as though you have “figured it out” multiple times – only for out of place details to cause you to look further and find a new revelation.
