Call of Duty 2024, also known as Black Ops 6 has sparked some confusion as fans are questioning where Black Ops 5 is if we’re already onto the sixth installment. Black Ops 6 was confirmed to be COD 2024 when Microsoft recently teased the upcoming Xbox showcase event which is set to unveil Treyarch’s latest entry in the series. Here’s why the new Call of Duty is called Black Ops 6, not Black Ops 5.

THE BLACK OPS SERIES – FULL TIMELINE
Treyarch essentially kickstarted the Black Ops series with World at War (2008) as that title serves as a prologue to the narrative that’s explored in Black Ops (2010). The studio would go on to make three more sequels, which went further into the future. Black Ops 2 flew past the 60s and 70s to cover both the 80s and early 2020s.

Black Ops 3 brought the series even further into the future to 2065, with very little connection to the first two Black Ops titles. Black Ops 4 then served as a prequel, focusing on the characters of BO3 Multiplayer through Blackout (Battle Royale) and Specialist stories (onboarding missions) after the single player campaign was cancelled.
COLD WAR IS BLACK OPS 5
After Sledgehammer and Raven failed to execute a collaborative Call of Duty for the 2020 release, Activision pulled Treyarch off post launch support for BO4 to salvage the project. What came to be was Black Ops Cold War, a miracle title that was overwhelmingly well received after being released during the height of the pandemic.

Serving as a direct sequel set in between the first two Black Ops games, Cold War offered a classic style multiplayer and was the first Treyarch title to integrate with Call of Duty Warzone (2020). An in game message of the day during the launch window contained a placeholder logo for the game, depicting Black Ops V (Black Ops 5) instead of Cold War.

Although Cold War is without a doubt the 5th Black Ops title in the series, a placeholder logo confirms the title followed the numerical name which previous entries did. Fans have pointed out franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Fallout released titles in between their numerically titled games, but didn’t count those entries when naming their next title.

MICROSOFT CONFIRMS BLACK OPS 6
The Xbox showcase event scheduled for June 9th is meant to unveil Call of Duty 2024 as Black Ops 6. The teaser image contains the placeholder cerberus logo and a redacted title. It’s easy to make out the word “ops” which confirms Black Ops is in the title.

There appears to be space for around one to two characters next to “ops” which seem to make out a V. COD 2024 isn’t Black Ops 5, meaning there’s a “6” or a “VI” in the graphic. Players also speculated that the character could be an X, considering the game is internally referenced as “T10” reflecting Treyarch’s tenth Call of Duty title.
NEW REWARD CONFIRMS BLACK OPS 6
Following the launch of Season 3 Reloaded, dataminers found references to the upcoming Black Ops 6 reveal event, which will be within Warzone. Amongst other findings such as the Woods pre order skin, leakers discovered a reward which will likely be unlocked for finishing the Black Ops 6 reveal event.

The Steel blueprint for the 9mm Daemon is a reimagining of the infamous sally 1911 pistol from Black Ops (2010). Originally, 8 tally marks were seen on the mustang and sally. Treyarch have seemingly reduced the tally marks from eight to six, which serves as additional confirmation of their new game’s title.
THE END
In all, COD 2024 is Black Ops 6 since the fifth entry released in 2020 with Black Ops Cold War. Microsoft is planning on revealing Black Ops VI with the Xbox showcase event at the beginning of June.
