Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Gameplay Event, Open World Missions & Exclusive Details

Following the reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 3, additional gameplay details were shared for the MWIII campaign, and how the missions are going to be different from usual. MW3 Campaign Early Access is scheduled for November 2nd, 2023.

NEW MW3 Campaign Gameplay Event

As we’ve seen with previous Call of Duty titles, this year’s Gamescom event is hosting a panel for Modern Warfare 3, where additional Campaign gameplay will be shown. It’s possible that we receive further details on when Multiplayer or Zombies will be unveiled, but for now we could expect up to ten minutes of footage from one of the game’s new missions. Gamescom opening night is on Tuesday, August 22nd at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Call of Duty is typically featured towards the middle of a major gaming event. Players can hop into the MW3 campaign early on November 2nd, if they pre ordered the game though.

The First Campaign Details For Modern Warfare 3

Last week, a few content creators traveled to Sledgehammer Games to hear a briefing and watch gameplay of Modern Warfare 3’s campaign. During a sit down with the developers, the following Campaign details were revealed:

  • Features Task Force 141, Farah, Shepherd, Makarov & More
  • The story takes place right after Modern Warfare 2
  • Contains locales from Verdansk, and other places around the globe
  • Half of the missions are linear, like a traditional campaign
  • Half of the missions are Open Combat missions, allowing you to choose your path

It’s currently unclear how long the Campaign is, but it appears to be combining the open world aspect from Black Ops Cold War (2020) and combining it with the traditional Call of Duty single player experience.

How Verdansk is Actually Returning

Fans noticed points of interest from Verdansk in the initial Makarov reveal trailer, which had fans speculating how the map could return inside of Warzone. Although not much has been revealed for Modern Warfare 3’s Warzone integration, the way in which Verdansk is returning may have already been revealed. It appears one of the Campaign missions is a flashback, explaining how Konni broke Makarov out of prison, which of course takes place before the Zombies outbreak that nuked the map in 2021. Players can expect to see areas like the prison, dam and stadium in Modern Warfare 3’s campaign.

Open Combat Missions in Campaign Explained

A recent Call of Duty blogpost provided further information about the new non-linear missions coming to Modern Warfare 3. Fans of Cold War will recognize the freedom of choice that is rarely featured in a Call of Duty campaign.

The blogpost information includes:

Combat means making decisions; using different Loadouts and planning different paths through every operation across an involved and thrilling Campaign. In addition to the signature, cinematic Call of Duty missions, Modern Warfare III introduces Open Combat Missions, with even greater emphasis on player choice. Naturally, you’ll have the use of all the weapons, equipment, and tactics present in an action-packed Modern Warfare single-player experience, but for some of your engagements, it is completely up to you to decide on an appropriate course of action.

Feel free to take advantage of any operable vehicles within your area of operations. You’re able to experiment with and leverage tactical and lethal equipment. You have the flexibility to maneuver across the sizable landscape of a mission’s AO and approach objectives from multiple angles. You can truly play how you want to play, and Open Combat Missions will support it.
