Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is rumored to release in 2026. One of the key features speculated to return is DMZ, last seen in Modern Warfare 2 (2022). It quickly became a popular mode during MW2, as it was Free-To-Play with Warzone 2.0 starting with Season 1. Today, we’re going over all the details we know so far about DMZ coming back to the franchise. Here’s what you need to know:

DMZ Returning Instead of Spec Ops?
Spec Ops was the 3rd mode in Modern Warfare 2 (2022), & a paid mode at that. It required you to own the full version of MW2 (2022). Originally, Spec Ops were sort of barebones & lackluster missions for players to run through in the mode. This would change with the release of the Mid Season 1 update that where we’d get fleshed out missions called “Raids”.
DMZ is seemingly set to be combined with Spec Ops in MW4. This however would also lead to DMZ being a paid mode, instead of the free mode it was for years. The reasoning. Behind DMZ being free though, is that it was in a “beta” state, for the entirety of MW2 (2022). With it returning, it’ll be the fully completed mode, thus leaving the “beta” stage.

This does cause issue though, as the mode being paid could lead to it only getting a year of support. As well as alienating fans who enjoyed the mode for free for years, suddenly having to pay for the mode they may have spent hours having fun & playing.
Not Using the Warzone Map
The two modes could co-exist however as it’s being rumored that DMZ will not be sharing a map with Warzone. It will instead be sharing a map with Ground War, as well as its own original maps along the way. Honestly it’s best to keep the two modes separate (DMZ & WZ). Crazy how originally, DMZ looked to be the main mode, while Battle Royale was close to an afterthought.
This would be good for fans of either WZ or DMZ. They wouldn’t have to play the same map when jumping into different modes. DMZ & Ground War would be linked by a map, while Warzone could stay completely fresh.
A New Location
Leakers on Twitter have found references to the next big map that Infinity Ward could be working on. This map is allegedly called ‘Tumen’. Now, Tumen is a small city in China, as well as a river that borders China & North Korea. It’s unclear if it’ll be a 1:1 build of the real location or not. The report of this new map goes in hand with the report from (TheGhostOfHope), that mentions DMZ would not be suing the Warzone map.
Potential ‘DMZ/MW4’ Map is Codenamed ‘Tumen’ in the files:

Warzone Engine
As far as the engine goes, they’re likely to continue using the engine currently in use right now for Warzone. That’s more so probably the definitive engine, at least for the next few COD entries. Maybe we see another COD HQ reset? Or at the very least they reset the cosmetics, to where we can’t use the old ones.
There can only be so many COD titles integrated in one Warzone iteration after all, without causing disaster.
PvP or PvPvE or Both?

It’s being rumored that the studio is in current debate over whether DMZ should be PvP, PvE, or both. For explanation:
- PvP (Player Vs. Player)
- PvE (Player Vs. Enemy)
- PvPvE (Player Vs. Player Vs. Enemy)
PvPvE is currently how DMZ stands in MW2 (2022). Your squad fights against not only other squads, but the AI Enemies that frequently deploy in. Reception & debate is rather mixed on subjects like this.
DMZ had an interesting concept called assimilation. This is where your trio could add up to 3 more players & make a full 6-man squad. However, this was later nerfed to only 4-man squads. PvP is a driving factor of the mode however, as it adds more replay ability, challenge, risk, action, etc. To remove that would be to remove a core feature of the mode.

If fun & challenging new missions are added, Easter eggs, rewards, as well as seasonal inventory wipes, (possibly even integrate DMZ into challenge events) it could create a good gameplay loop, instead of players being bored & simply going in to hunt squads. Unless, it’s a small map like B21 was. Then you’re likely to see most players load in just to engage in PvP.
The more content added into DMZ, the less likely you are to see sweating from players just trying to rush & win the game. Think of Blackout in Black Ops 4. Th amount of content offered (Character Missions, Easter Eggs, Map Updates, Mini Boss Fights, etc.) that kept players occupied & made the mode feel fresh.
Secret DMZ Menu Added
With the update of Black Ops 6, leaker (RealityUK) on Twitter discovered a new DMZ menu in the Black Ops UI. This menu could possibly be test for when the next iteration of DMZ releases in MW4 (COD 2026). The menu depicts Dog Tags, which was a system back in back in the free version of DMZ a few years ago.
It would change based on the streak a player was back in DMZ, such as going full matches without getting wiped. This would give you higher rarity tags to pick up off enemies you kill, & can then sell for currency at a buy station.
Possible Features Coming
Currency
According to leakers (CODWarfareForum) on Twitter, references to DMZ currency have been found. DMZ Currency would be a system where you could earn cash while playing & exchange it for items at a Buy Station. Possibly even use the cash to buy items at the main menu for permanent upgrades in-game.
DMZs Newest Boss?
Leakers have also found references to the operator ‘Mace’ to be returning in BO6. Not only has he been found, but apparently, he’ll be a boss character you fight in DMZ, similar to that of Velikan back in Building 21 (MW2).
Weather Events
We could possibly see weather events returning in COD 2026. If that feature will be featured in DMZ, it’s unclear, as it’s way too early to tell yet. What has been reported is that weather events could return in COD 2026, be it Campaign, Multiplayer, or DMZ.
