Carry Forward in Modern Warfare 4 Explained | What’s Carrying Forward

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releasing later this year, the age old question arises once again, what’s carrying over? For every new Call of Duty game, there’s usually something or another that carries over from the last. Whether it’s operators, weapons, maps, COD Points, etc. Call of Duty has had some form of Carry Forward over the years. While it was seemingly canceled after BO6, there are a few noteworthy things that will be coming into MW4 from BO7. Today, we’re going to take a look at Carry Forward, what it entails, & what will be coming to Modern Warfare 4 when it releases later this year. Here’s what you need to know:

What is Carry Forward?

What is Carry Forward you may be asking? Like the name implies, Carry Forward is the art of things from the previous Call of Duty game carrying into the next. The last time we fully saw this with full releases was MW2 (2022) into MW3 (2023). Weapons, operators, camos, etc. all carried over into MW3. However, less carried over from MW3 to Black Ops 6.

With the release of Black Ops 7, Carry Forward had been cancelled. Operators, weapons, & operator skins were all left in Black Ops 6, with the only thing carrying over was Double XP Tokens, as well as Gobblegums. Modern Warfare 4 is taking a similar approach.

All Content Carrying Forward into Modern Warfare 4

As for content carrying forward from Black Ops 7, there is only a select few promotional items that will be making the jump. Here is everything we know so far that will be carrying over into Modern Warfare 4 from BO7:

  • COD Points (Locked to your specific Platform) So COD Points will carry over, as long as your copy of MW4 is on the same platform as BO7.
  • All Double XP Tokens
  • ‘Hunter Killer’ Operator Unlocked by Preordering MW4)
  • Gilded Ruin & Moonlit Pearl Camos (Unlocked by Preordering MW4 & Completing Challenges)

It’s a very small list of things carrying into Modern Warfare 4, as opposed to the full carry forward of Modern Warfares past.

Back to Back Sequel Games Cancelled

Call of Duty may be reevaluating their release strategy after doing back to back releases for the past few years on COD Games. They followed up the 2022 release of Modern Warfare 2 with Modern Warfare 3 in 2023. While the game sold well, it’s believed to have underperformed compared to its previous iteration.

The same goes for Black Ops 6 (2024) & Black Ops 7 (2025). While both sold SIGNIFICANTLY well, Black Ops 7 is noted to have sold less than its predecessor BO6. With the upcoming release of Modern Warfare 4, Activision has announced they will no longer be doing back to back consecutive sequel games.

This is likely to give the teams a fresh new feeling for each COD release going forward. This also provides a fresher experience for players who may have felt the back to back sequel releases felt too similar to one another.
